Plenty of studies have shown the benefits of reading to your children daily. At the same time, there are multiple values to spending time outside. So why not combine the two?
Take your reading outside!
1. Backyard grass – One easy way to take your reading outside, head to your own backyard. Any greenspace around where you live is ideal for throwing down a blanket and diving into a story.
2. Hideout in a tree house – Whether it is a treehouse, playhouse, fort or tent, reading there is so fun. Plus, kiddos love little hiding spots like these. Even though they are technically structures, you still get the essence and fresh air of the outdoors.
3. Porch sitting – When the sun gets too hot or the weather is rainy, a covered outside area like a porch will do the trick. A picnic shelter at a park would work too. One of my favorite locations is a local coffee shop with rocking chairs on the porch.
4. Head to a park – If greenspace is lacking where you live, you may have to look for it. Local parks are a great place to start. Even some libraries and bookstores offer outdoor sitting areas.
5. Beachfront or any water – There is something calming about the sight and sound of water. That makes it an ideal place to relax with a favorite book. For added delight, have your feet in the water as you read.
My family has a goal of spending 1000 hours outside this year. I also have a personal goal of reading at least 20 minutes a day of something I personally enjoy. Add in the time I want the kids to read a day, the minutes and hours start adding up! So combining these two activities is ideal for us.
I hope you all take advantage of combining outdoor and reading time. Please share you and your family enjoying this time together. What are you reading and where? I’ll do the same!
